Certificates and Consular Statements at the General Consulate of Brazil

Need to request a Life Certificate or consular statements? Learn the step-by-step process for obtaining these services at Brazilian consulates in Spain.
Brazilian residents in Spain often need to prove facts or documents before official bodies, either in Brazil or for local procedures. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has standardized the issuance of Certificates and Statements, a service available both for those living under the jurisdiction of the General Consulate of Brazil in Barcelona and those served by the General Consulate of Brazil in Madrid.
Among the most requested documents is the Life Certificate. This document is essential for pensioners and retirees to continue receiving their benefits from INSS, serving as proof that the beneficiary is alive and eligible to maintain their social security rights.
How to Request the Service
The request process is done digitally through the e-consular system. The procedure follows three main steps:
- Gathering Documentation: Before scheduling, prepare the necessary documents. For a Life Certificate, you will need an original photo ID (Brazilian passport, RG or driver's license for Brazilians; RNE, passport or DNI for foreigners). In case of minors, their passport, proof of residence (empadronamiento with history or school certificate), and identification of the responsible person are required.
- Scheduling: Access e-consular to book your appointment. The system will guide you through selecting the specific service.
- Consultation and Signature: The form must be filled out in advance, but the signature occurs only during the videoconference with the consular agent. After the virtual meeting, it is necessary to send the signed form, a copy of the ID document, proof of payment of the consular fee, and an envelope for returning the documents.
Information on Fees
The issuance of these documents has a cost of €9.73 in consular stamps. Payment must be made via bank transfer. Detailed instructions on how to make the payment are available on the Consular Fees page of your consulate jurisdiction.
Why Use the Official System?
The benefit of performing the procedure through e-consular is the guarantee that the document has public faith. Many citizens try to resolve pending matters with statements issued by local bodies that do not have validity for Brazilian social security purposes or document renewal processes in Brazil. By using the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you obtain a document officially recognized by Brazilian institutions, avoiding the need for subsequent apostille or refusal due to lack of authenticity.
Remember that if you live far away, the videoconference mode saves travel costs and time to reach the consulate headquarters, making the process of renewing benefits or proving marital status much more practical for those settled in Spain.
