Brazilian Consulate in Spain: addresses, services and CPF renewal

Those living in Spain who need a Brazilian consular service usually only know the Madrid address, but that means an expensive, unnecessary trip for those living in Barcelona, Valencia, or the Balearics. Brazil's consular network in Spain is larger than it appears.

The two Consulates General

Madrid (jurisdiction over central and northern Spain): Calle de Goya, 5-7, Pasaje Comercial, 2nd mezzanine, 28001 Madrid. Nearest metro: Goya (lines 2 and 4).

Barcelona (jurisdiction over Catalonia and the region): Avenida Diagonal, 468, 2nd floor, 08006 Barcelona.

Each operates independently — if you live in Catalonia, you don't need to travel to Madrid to issue a passport or a power of attorney.

Honorary consulates — closer to you

Beyond the two Consulates General, there are honorary posts (more limited service, but useful for simple cases and initial information) in:

Honorary consulates don't issue passports or handle all the services of a Consulate General — before traveling there, confirm by phone whether the service you need is available or whether you'll need to go to Madrid/Barcelona anyway.

How service works (e-consular)

In-person service at the Consulates General is always by prior appointment, managed through the e-consular system. You submit scanned documents first; only after they're validated does the system release available dates and times. On the day of your appointment, bring the original documents matching what you submitted online.

Phone/WhatsApp service: Monday to Friday, 3:30pm to 4:30pm (Madrid time) — outside that window, no one answers.

Available services: passport issuance, birth registration, marriage registration, death registration, document legalization, and powers of attorney.

Annual CPF renewal — not done at the consulate

If you have a CPF and are no longer a tax resident in Brazil, the Receita Federal requires annual renewal. This isn't resolved by visiting the consulate — it's done exclusively through the "Receita Federal" app (Android/iOS). An unrenewed CPF can block financial transactions and the issuance of other documents in Brazil, so it's worth setting a yearly reminder.

Marriage notices

Anyone planning to marry under Brazilian consular jurisdiction should follow the notices published on their Consulate General's website (Madrid or Barcelona, depending on jurisdiction) — that's where any legal impediments are formally announced.
