Alcazaba of Almería: What to See, How to Get There and Admission Costs

The Alcazaba of Almería is one of the largest Islamic fortresses in Spain and a must-see when visiting Almería. Built by the Moors in the 10th century, it's even larger than the Alhambra of Granada in terms of area. The best part? Entry is free or symbolic, making it one of the most accessible tours in Andalusia.

What is the Alcazaba?

The Alcazaba de Almería is a medieval Islamic fortress built from the 10th century by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III and expanded and perfected by successive Moorish rulers. It sits atop a hill in the center of the city, offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and all of Almería.

The complex is divided into three enclosures:

• First enclosure: gardens recreated with vegetation and water channels, evoking the style of Andalusian palaces
• Second enclosure: the political and residential heart of the fortress, featuring ruins of palaces, cisterns, and the Tower of Homage
• Third enclosure: the Christian area, incorporated after the Reconquista by the Catholic Monarchs in the 15th century

Admission: managed by the Andalusian Government. In practice, entry is free or symbolic — at the ticket office, they ask for your city of residence and you proceed. Confirm current prices at the site or on the Andalusian Government's website before visiting as fees may change.

How to Get There

The Alcazaba is located in the historic center of Almería, just a few minutes' walk from the Cathedral and the shopping center.

• On foot: from downtown, climb up Calle Almanzor or Calle Alcazaba. It's about 10 minutes of steep but totally feasible walking.
• By car: there is parking on Calle Almanzor and nearby streets. Note: the surrounding streets are narrow.
• By bus: urban lines 1 and 2 stop near the base of the hill.

The main entrance is located at Calle Almanzor, s/n.

What Not to Miss

Views of the Mediterranean Sea — from atop the walls, you get one of the best views of all of Almería's coastline. Bring a camera.

Gardens of the first enclosure — recreation of the original Arab gardens with flowers, water channels, and silence contrasting with the city below.

Tower of Homage — the highest point in the fortress from where you can see the entire city and, on clear days, the African coast far away.

Sunset — if visiting during summer hours (when it closes at 9 PM), try to arrive around 7 PM to catch the golden light over the city and sea. It's one of the best sunsets in Andalusia.

Practical Tips

• Comfortable footwear: the ground is uneven, with stones and climbs. Avoid thin sandals.
• Water: especially during Almería’s summer heat, it can be intense. Bring water.
• Average duration: 1h30 to 2 hours for a leisurely visit.
• Audio guide: available on-site for a small additional fee. It's worth it to understand the historical context.
• Photography: free throughout the complex — it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo here.

Combining with Other Tours

The Alcazaba combines well with other points in the historic center of Almería:

• Almería Cathedral — 10 minutes' walk away, also featuring unique defensive architecture (it was built to resist pirate attacks)
• La Chanca neighborhood — next to the Alcazaba, with colorful houses on the slopes of the rock
• Central Market — for lunch after your visit, about a 15-minute walk
